My zine group chose to bring to attention the environment. The purpose of our zine was to inform zine readers on different environmental issues. Whether it's about the degradation of our earth's biodiversity, how consumerism affecting the environment, or climate change. Within my personal page in the zine you could easily see the topic is fashion and what it is hiding within the pretty fabric. It show magazine cutouts of models wearing popular clothing but behind the models are pictures of the truth. An image of smoke rise towards the sky to highlight the fact that clothing pollutes the air in the production of chemically bases clothing. Gloves covered in color byes are to show the major role of chemicals in the textiles magnefacsering chain. The quote “What all the unicorns will be wearing this summer,” is to add emphasis on the fact that almost all clothing has some amount of cotton.
It was one of my favorite parts, learning the surprising negative effects in the production of clothing. Who would have thought that the clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world, that alone knocked me off my feet. I tried to follow the production chain moving up from the growing of the dirtyest crop to the preservatives cotting our clothing. One fact that I found hard to believe was the fact that in order to cultivate enough cotton for a single t-shirt 20,000 liters are needed. How many shirt do I have or more over how many articles with cotton do I have in my home. Learning about this topic change the way I see clothing, it’s not just something I buy without think.
During the entire time I was exhibiting what I was most proud of was my knowledge on my own topic. I had a conversation where we spoke for who knows how long but I still had more to say. I told people how what I learned impacted me and that, if only others knew I know that their view on clothing would change too. I personally really like exhibiting, speaking with complete strangers on something that they might not know about. I really liked our table setup too, the music and energy it all came together rather nicely.
